The changing sky
The Moon today
The current phase and the next dates to look up. These calculations describe the shared sky; your birth chart is a separate snapshot.

Waning crescent
The Moon is moving from last quarter toward new Moon. The sunlit portion we see continues to shrink.
31.7% illuminated · Virgo 2°48′
Illumination describes the sunlit fraction of the Moon's visible disk. It does not measure how bright your local sky is.
Phase and sign tell you different things
The phase comes from the changing Sun-Moon geometry. “Waxing” means the visible lit portion is growing; “waning” means it is shrinking. A quarter Moon looks half lit: the name describes its place in the cycle.
The Moon's current tropical sign, Virgo, describes its position along the zodiac. Your natal Moon sign uses its position at your birth and stays the same when today's Moon moves on.

How these dates are calculated
Primary phases occur at Moon-Sun longitude differences of 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°, viewed from Earth's centre. They are shared astronomical instants.
astronomy-engine 2.1.19 · moon-phases-v1. This calendar covers the current UTC month and the following 11 months.
Independent checks cover all 149 primary phases in the U.S. Naval Observatory tables for 2023, 2024 and 2026. Differences were under 2 minutes. Other years are not independently checked here.
