The Ascendant starts the first Placidus house

The Ascendant is the point where the zodiac meets the eastern horizon. Astriel defaults to Placidus, where this exact degree begins house 1. The next calculated cusp begins house 2; it can fall within the same sign or a later sign.

For an illustrative Ascendant at 20° Libra and second cusp at 15° Scorpio, a planet at 10° Scorpio is still in the first house. The sign boundary at 0° Scorpio does not end that house.

Read the rising sign with its ruler

Astrologers read the rising sign through self-presentation and the approach to new situations. Its ruling planet adds context. For Libra rising, that planet is Venus; the sign and house of Venus help extend the reading beyond Libra alone.

The chart ruler calculator uses traditional sign rulers. Read the rising-sign guide for the relationship between the Ascendant, its ruler and the houses.

When the birth time is uncertain

The rising sign is also called the Ascendant. An approximate or unknown time leaves it unavailable in this calculator. We never substitute noon for a missing time.
