Find your North Node

Find your true North Node sign in the tropical zodiac. Enter an exact, approximate or unknown birth time and inspect any possible sign changes.

Date of birth

Use the local birth date in the modern (Gregorian) calendar, from 1600 to today.

Time of birth

Local birth time. For 2:30 pm, enter 14:30.

If the end is at or before the start, the range ends the next day. Equal times cover a full day.

We check the whole period. The Ascendant and houses are left out.

Placidus uses your birth time to calculate unequal houses. Whole Sign gives each sign one house. Both need an exact time.

The point this calculator locates

The North Node is the northward crossing of the Moon's orbital plane and the ecliptic, Earth's orbital plane. It is a calculated point. The South Node lies opposite it.

Astriel uses the true node from its birth-chart engine. The result names that method so you can compare the same setting in another calculator.

Read the North Node with the South Node

Modern evolutionary astrology reads this axis as a contrast between familiar habits and qualities being developed. The South Node supplies the familiar side; the North Node supplies the direction of exploration. This is an interpretive tradition, not evidence of a past life or a fixed destiny.

For a North Node in Aries and South Node in Libra, the contrast concerns independent choice and attention to others. The reading can consider how to act independently while retaining the ability to cooperate. Both ends belong to the same chart.

The node's house adds a topic, while the ruler of its sign adds another placement to examine. An Aries North Node leads to Mars. Its actual sign and available house give the interpretation more detail than the node sign alone.

True node and mean node

The true node uses the Moon's orbital plane at the selected moment. The mean node smooths the motion over time. These methods can return different degrees and, near a boundary, different signs.

Astriel currently offers the true node. It does not substitute a mean-node value when the true-node calculation is unavailable.

Astrodienst's Swiss Ephemeris documentation, sections 2.2.1 and 2.2.2, explains the distinction. Astriel uses Astronomy Engine, not Swiss Ephemeris.

When your birth time is unknown

Choose Unknown if you have no recorded time. The calculation checks the local birth day and shows the supported sign or possible signs. A single exact degree is omitted for an interval.

An approximate time checks the selected interval. Near a sign change, retain every returned possibility until a more precise birth record resolves it. The calculation's sampling limits are described in birth-time methods.

The South Node and the rest of your chart

The two nodes form an axis, 180 degrees apart. For example, a North Node in Aries puts the South Node in Libra. This describes their geometric relationship.

Use the full chart to inspect the North Node's returned contacts and available house placement. Houses require an exact time. A node sign alone does not establish a personal history, life purpose or future event.

Comparing a result from another site

Check the birth date, local time and time zone first. Then compare the zodiac and node settings. A sidereal result uses a different zodiac reference from this tropical calculator.

The name true node identifies a method; it does not guarantee perfect accuracy. Independent acceptance of Astriel's node calculations across its supported dates is still in progress.
