The sextile links different approaches that can support each other. Venus supplies the attraction or value; Mars supplies the initiative. The reading becomes specific when the signs show how those functions cooperate.
A worked chart example
Venus at 10° Aries and Mars at 8° Gemini form a sextile with a 2° orb. Venus in Aries values directness and independence; Mars in Gemini acts through questions and experimentation. Trying several approaches to a personally chosen project illustrates their cooperation.
The houses identify the setting. Venus in the 5th would bring creative enjoyment into the interpretation; Mars in the 3rd would add everyday communication or learning. That house comparison applies only when the calculated chart places the planets there.

Venus at 10 degrees Aries and Mars at 8 degrees Gemini are 58 degrees apart. The difference from 60 degrees gives a 2-degree sextile orb.

These synthetic positions explain the arithmetic; they are not a recorded birth chart. Measure the shorter distance around the 360-degree zodiac.

Unknown birth time and conditional contacts
Use the orb range and status in the calculated result. A conditional contact meets the selected rule for only part of the possible birth-time interval.
A contact can hold throughout that interval while its orb changes. Keep the uncertainty instead of choosing a birth time to fit an interpretation.

Applying means that the orb is decreasing at the calculated instant. Separating means that it is increasing. Both planets' motion matters, including retrograde motion.
The angle alone cannot identify that direction. Use the calculated motion label when the birth time supports one.

No. A natal Venus-Mars contact compares two positions in one person's chart. Synastry compares two charts and requires both sets of birth details.
