Natal chart reference
Venus square Mars
Venus square Mars describes friction between values or desires and the way they are pursued. Wanting an experience and choosing an action that supports it can require different adjustments. The square identifies those competing approaches within one natal chart.

Venus describes what attracts or pleases; Mars describes assertion. With a square, their styles can interfere. An attempt to protect something valued, for example, can restrict the freedom that made it appealing.
A worked chart example
Venus at 10° Aries and Mars at 12° Cancer form a square with a 2° orb. Aries gives Venus a preference for independence. Cancer directs Mars toward protecting emotional or domestic security, so the symbolic tension concerns freedom and protection.
Compare the same Venus with Mars in Gemini at 8°. That contact is a sextile: independence and experimentation can support each other. The difference comes from the measured angle and sign styles, not a score for relationship success.
Check the measured angle
Venus at 10 degrees Aries and Mars at 12 degrees Cancer are 92 degrees apart. The square orb is 2 degrees because the exact angle is 90 degrees.
Work through the orb
These synthetic positions explain the arithmetic; they are not a recorded birth chart. Measure the shorter distance around the 360-degree zodiac.
The smaller separation is 92 degrees. Its difference from 90 degrees gives an orb of 2 degrees.
Astriel uses the smaller of the two bodies' natal major-aspect limits. Venus and Mars each use 6 degrees, so this pair uses 6 degrees.
Compare natal orb limitsCheck the degrees as well as the signs
A square does not require matching degrees within the signs. The measured longitude difference, including its allowed orb, decides whether the contact is listed.
The diagram shows longitude separation only. Planetary latitude and distance from Earth are separate measurements.
Keep the rest of the chart in view
Venus describes what is valued and enjoyed; Mars describes how effort is directed. Their signs add style, while their houses identify the subjects involved. The aspect connects those two functions.
These contacts can be read in creative work, personal choices or relationships. A natal Venus-Mars aspect alone cannot tell us which setting matters most to someone.

Unknown birth time and conditional contacts
Use the orb range and status in the calculated result. A conditional contact meets the selected rule for only part of the possible birth-time interval.
A contact can hold throughout that interval while its orb changes. Keep the uncertainty instead of choosing a birth time to fit an interpretation.
Read the birth-time methodApplying and separating
Applying means that the orb is decreasing at the calculated instant. Separating means that it is increasing. Both planets' motion matters, including retrograde motion.
The angle alone cannot identify that direction. Use the calculated motion label when the birth time supports one.
Compare motion examplesDoes this describe chemistry with someone else?
No. A natal Venus-Mars contact compares two positions in one person's chart. Synastry compares two charts and requires both sets of birth details.
Neither calculation establishes attraction, consent or a relationship outcome. A person's behavior and stated wishes provide information that a chart cannot supply.

Cafe Astrology's Venus-Mars reference documents conventional themes of assertion and relating. Worked comparisons also draw on Astriel's astrology reference, Part IV, major aspects and the Venus-Mars pair.
We do not adopt the source's gender stereotypes or claims about sexuality, abuse or innate talent. Astrology does not establish those characteristics.
Numerical examples follow Astriel's selected natal rules. Interpretation is a reflection practice, without scientific evidence that these angles determine personality.
