What the time means

The new Moon is a calculated instant when the Moon and Sun have the same geocentric ecliptic longitude. The date above uses UTC and the time is shown to the minute.

Convert that instant to your time zone before adding it to a local calendar. A late-night UTC event may fall on the next day where you live.

The first visible crescent comes after the new-Moon instant. Its visibility depends on your location and observing conditions.

New Moon and the visible crescent

At new Moon, the Moon's unlit side faces Earth. A crescent sighting is a separate observation later in the cycle.

These dates do not predict the first crescent visible from your location or determine a calendar based on local sightings.

Why a month can have two dates or none

Calendar months and lunar cycles have different lengths. We keep every new-Moon instant in the UTC month instead of choosing one to represent it.

The monthly calendar shows the other primary phases. The previous and next month links stay within the published calendar window.

Calculation source and limits

astronomy-engine 2.1.19 · moon-phases-v1. Dates come from Astriel's calculation backend when this page is requested.

The linked daily sky page uses 12:00 UTC for that date, which can differ from the new-Moon instant.

A phase date does not establish a personal prediction. For the Moon's placement at birth, use the natal Moon calculator.
