Natal chart reference

Sun square Moon

Sun square Moon describes friction between personal direction and emotional needs. A choice that serves one can disturb the other. The square names a recurring point of adjustment: both needs belong in the interpretation, even when they call for different actions.

Check the geometry

Sun at 10° Aries and Moon at 12° Cancer: separation 92°, square orb 2°.

How the orb is calculated

These are synthetic longitudes, not a recorded birth chart. Measure the smaller separation around the 360° zodiac, then its distance from 90°.

Astriel uses an 8° limit for major natal Sun-Moon aspects. Other calculators can select different orbs. Read the limit beside your result.

The connection with lunar phase

Exact 90° and 270° directed longitude differences correspond to the two quarter phases. Both become 90° when reported as the smaller separation.

The aspect measures zodiac longitude. It does not establish an eclipse or local visibility.

Purpose and comfort ask for different responses

With the Sun at 10° Aries and Moon at 12° Cancer, independent action meets a need for familiarity and belonging. Accepting a role away from home is one possible illustration of that tension. The chart cannot predict that event; the example shows why excitement and reluctance could coexist.

Read it with the rest of the chart

The Sun describes purpose and self-expression in astrology; the Moon describes emotional needs and habitual responses. Their signs describe how each function operates. The aspect describes how they interact.

Houses add the topics involved. A Sun-Moon opposition across the 4th and 10th houses connects private home life with public responsibility. Across the 2nd and 8th, the same angle connects personal resources with shared commitments.

Other contacts can change the reading. A Moon trine Sun can coexist with a Moon square Saturn, bringing ease in one relationship between planets and friction in another.

Uncertain time and conditional aspects

With an uncertain birth time, use the orb range and status printed in the result. A contact that holds for only part of the period remains conditional.

Do not select a birth time because the interpretation sounds familiar. An exact-time input also cannot verify the accuracy of the original birth record.

Applying, separating and exact

Applying means the orb is decreasing at the calculated instant; separating means it is increasing. The angle or sign names alone cannot determine this.

Astriel's exact label uses a one-arcsecond numerical threshold. It is not a claim of one-arcsecond astronomical accuracy.

Natal, synastry and transit are different comparisons

This guide compares the Sun and Moon in one birth chart. Synastry compares factors belonging to two people. A transit compares a moving body with a natal position.

The geometry shares an angle name, but the context and allowed orb can differ.
