The 10th house

Public role

The 10th house concerns your public role, reputation, and visible responsibilities. Career is one expression, but unpaid leadership and other public commitments also belong here. It asks what you become known for and what other people expect you to carry.

The role that other people can see

A public role comes with expectations. A manager, a caregiver recognized by a community, and an elected representative face different demands. The 10th-house topic is broad enough to discuss all of them without treating salary as the measure of significance.

The Midheaven, or MC, is a calculated angle associated with public direction. In Placidus it is the starting cusp of the 10th house. A planet farther into this house need not be conjunct the Midheaven.

The Sun here adds the symbolism of visibility and identity. Saturn emphasizes responsibility and duration; Venus introduces relationships and preference. These readings cannot promise success or identify one correct profession.

Aries on the 10th cusp, Mars in the 6th

Suppose the calculated 10th cusp is in Aries. Mars rules Aries. If Mars is in the 6th, the reading connects public responsibility with everyday work.

A person whose reputation rests on practical delivery illustrates that connection. Their actual profession still requires information beyond the chart.

Locate your 10th house

Astriel uses Placidus. Find cusp 10 in your calculated house list: its sign and degree mark the start of this house. The house ends at cusp 11.

Read the degrees between two cusps

An enlarged section of an illustrative Placidus chart. Positions are rounded to the nearest arcminute. An arcminute (′) is 1/60 of a degree.

House 10 begins
9°37′ Capricorn
House 11 begins
29°03′ Capricorn

20°18′ Capricorn falls between these cusps, so the example planet belongs to house 10.

At the next calculated cusp, the planet belongs to house 11. Rounded labels can hide a small difference between a planet and a cusp. Use the house assignment in your result.

Read your own 10th house

  1. Start with the sign

The sign on the starting cusp adds a style to the house topic. A house number has no permanent zodiac sign. Planets farther inside the house can occupy a different sign from its cusp.

    Read the sign meanings
  2. Add the planets in the house

Read each planet's function alongside public role. The Sun concerns identity; the Moon concerns emotional needs. Venus introduces preference and relating; Saturn introduces structure and limits.

Several planets bring several themes to the same area. They do not automatically form a conjunction: the measured distance between them determines that aspect.

  3. Follow the house ruler

The ruler of the 10th adds a setting for public responsibilities. The MC defines this cusp in Placidus; check measured contacts to its degree separately.

Match the sign on the starting cusp to its traditional ruler:

    Aries or Scorpio
    Mars
    Taurus or Libra
    Venus
    Gemini or Virgo
    Mercury
    Cancer
    Moon
    Leo
    Sun
    Sagittarius or Pisces
    Jupiter
    Capricorn or Aquarius
    Saturn

For Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces, Astriel follows the traditional rulers shown here. Modern astrology also associates these signs with Pluto, Uranus, and Neptune respectively.

Compare traditional and modern sign rulers

Find that planet in your chart's positions list. Read its sign and house, then its aspects. The planet can occupy a different house from the one it rules.

The chart ruler is specifically the ruler of your Ascendant. Each other house takes its ruler from its own starting cusp.

If this house is empty

An empty 10th house does not mean unemployment or a life without achievement. Its sign and ruler still contribute to the reading.

Planets in the 10th house

Choose a planet placed here in your chart. Each guide explains the placement, with examples of how its sign changes the reading.

How the 10th relates to other houses

The 10th concerns public role; the 6th concerns daily tasks; the 2nd concerns personal resources. A prestigious title does not tell you the workload or the income.

Read its opposite: the 4th house

Opposite houses do not automatically create a planetary opposition. An aspect depends on the planets' degrees and the allowed orb.

Birth-time accuracy and house systems

Astriel currently leaves houses unavailable for approximate or unknown birth times. An exact time can also leave houses unavailable where the chosen house system is unsupported, including Placidus at polar latitudes.

Astriel defaults to Placidus. Each house starts at a calculated cusp and ends at the next one. Whole Sign starts house 1 at 0 degrees of the rising sign. A planet can change houses between these systems without changing its zodiac position.
