The 4th house

Home and family

The 4th house concerns home, family background, and the private foundations of a life. It asks where you belong and what you return to when public roles fall away. Family history is one part of this topic; the home you choose to build is another.

The difference between inheritance and belonging

Family customs can feel familiar without fitting adult life. A 4th-house reading can examine what someone keeps from their background and what they choose to change. It cannot reconstruct childhood from planetary positions.

The home itself also belongs here: the place you live and the conditions that make private life possible. Property has a 4th-house association, while the money involved in buying it introduces the 2nd or 8th.

Traditions differ over assigning a particular parent to the 4th or 10th house. Astriel uses the broader home and family meaning rather than assuming a family structure. In Placidus, the IC is the 4th cusp, directly opposite the Midheaven. Read a conjunction to that degree separately from a planet elsewhere in the 4th house.

Libra on the 4th cusp, Venus in the 9th

Suppose the calculated 4th cusp is in Libra. Its ruler is Venus. If Venus is in the 9th, the reading connects belonging with wider learning or beliefs.

An original example would be making a home that reflects ideas encountered through study or travel. The chart does not establish that someone moved abroad.

Locate your 4th house

Astriel uses Placidus. Find cusp 4 in your calculated house list: its sign and degree mark the start of this house. The house ends at cusp 5.

Read the degrees between two cusps

An enlarged section of an illustrative Placidus chart. Positions are rounded to the nearest arcminute. An arcminute (′) is 1/60 of a degree.

House 4 begins
9°37′ Cancer
House 5 begins
29°03′ Cancer

20°18′ Cancer falls between these cusps, so the example planet belongs to house 4.

At the next calculated cusp, the planet belongs to house 5. Rounded labels can hide a small difference between a planet and a cusp. Use the house assignment in your result.

Read your own 4th house

  1. Start with the sign

The sign on the starting cusp adds a style to the house topic. A house number has no permanent zodiac sign. Planets farther inside the house can occupy a different sign from its cusp.

    Read the sign meanings
  2. Add the planets in the house

Read each planet's function alongside home and family. The Sun concerns identity; the Moon concerns emotional needs. Venus introduces preference and relating; Saturn introduces structure and limits.

Several planets bring several themes to the same area. They do not automatically form a conjunction: the measured distance between them determines that aspect.

  3. Follow the house ruler

The 4th-house ruler adds another setting to the home topic. Its placement can help a reading move beyond a generic description of family.

Match the sign on the starting cusp to its traditional ruler:

    Aries or Scorpio
    Mars
    Taurus or Libra
    Venus
    Gemini or Virgo
    Mercury
    Cancer
    Moon
    Leo
    Sun
    Sagittarius or Pisces
    Jupiter
    Capricorn or Aquarius
    Saturn

For Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces, Astriel follows the traditional rulers shown here. Modern astrology also associates these signs with Pluto, Uranus, and Neptune respectively.

Compare traditional and modern sign rulers

Find that planet in your chart's positions list. Read its sign and house, then its aspects. The planet can occupy a different house from the one it rules.

The chart ruler is specifically the ruler of your Ascendant. Each other house takes its ruler from its own starting cusp.

If this house is empty

An empty 4th house leaves the topics of home and family intact. It says nothing about whether a family was present or supportive.

Planets in the 4th house

Choose a planet placed here in your chart. Each guide explains the placement, with examples of how its sign changes the reading.

How the 4th relates to other houses

The 4th describes private foundations. The opposite 10th concerns public responsibilities and reputation. A change of job can affect both: the public role changes, and home life must adjust.

Read its opposite: the 10th house

Opposite houses do not automatically create a planetary opposition. An aspect depends on the planets' degrees and the allowed orb.

Birth-time accuracy and house systems

Astriel currently leaves houses unavailable for approximate or unknown birth times. An exact time can also leave houses unavailable where the chosen house system is unsupported, including Placidus at polar latitudes.

Astriel defaults to Placidus. Each house starts at a calculated cusp and ends at the next one. Whole Sign starts house 1 at 0 degrees of the rising sign. A planet can change houses between these systems without changing its zodiac position.
