What the Sun brings to this house
The Sun in the 4th places the development of identity in the context of home, origins, and private foundations. A reader can explore what it means to have a place of your own, carry a family story, or decide which inherited expectations deserve a place in adult life.
The house does not reveal a particular childhood. It supplies a topic for interpretation, while the Sun introduces purpose and authorship within that topic. The 4th–10th axis helps distinguish a private foundation from a public role: a person can care deeply about both without wanting them to be identical.
How the sign changes the reading
A Cancer Sun in the 4th connects purpose with preserving a sense of home. An Aquarius Sun in the same house introduces questions about which family customs still make sense. Keeping a familiar gathering and changing how a household shares responsibilities are possible examples.
Follow the Moon for Cancer and Saturn, Aquarius's traditional ruler, for the second reading. The placement alone doesn't tell us what someone's childhood was like.
These are illustrative chart combinations. The ruler of the Sun's sign is called its dispositor. The house ruler comes from the sign on the starting cusp. They can be different planets, so check both signs in your chart.

Read the factors together
Cancer gives the Sun a concern with attachment and continuity. In the 4th, the focus is a private foundation. Saturn's square introduces a question about obligation: maintaining a household tradition may feel meaningful while its rules leave little room for your own preferences.
Keep the distinction
This combination can frame a conversation about belonging and responsibility. It cannot tell us whether a parent was strict or what happened in childhood. Those details must come from the person, not the chart.
How angles and orbs workHow this fits into your full chart
The 4th house tells you which area of life is involved: home and family. Sun brings its themes of purpose and identity into that area. Its sign adds how those themes are expressed.
Astriel uses Placidus by default. Each house begins at a calculated boundary, called a cusp, and ends at the next cusp. Use the house number beside the Sun in your chart.
Add your Sun sign
Find the Sun's sign in your chart's positions table and read it alongside this house placement. For instance, a planet in Aries emphasizes taking the first step; in Taurus, it emphasizes keeping a steady course.
Use the sign written beside the planet. A house can include more than one sign, so the sign at its beginning can differ from the planet's sign.

An aspect is an angle between two chart positions. Read the rows involving the Sun in your chart's aspect table. The other planet adds another need or concern to purpose and identity.
A square is usually read as a challenge in combining those needs. A trine suggests that they work together more easily. The orb tells you how far the angle is from exact; a smaller orb means a closer contact.
Learn to read aspects and orbsFollow the ruler of this house
The sign on the house's starting cusp has a ruling planet. Find that sign's traditional ruler, then look for the ruler in your chart. Its house connects the two areas of life.
For example, Leo on the 2nd-house cusp makes the Sun its ruler. If the Sun is in the 10th, a reading connects personal resources with public work.

What if my birth time is uncertain?
Astriel leaves houses unavailable for approximate or unknown times. A familiar description cannot resolve that uncertainty.
You can still read the Sun sign information supported by your entered birth period. Do not choose a house because its description sounds right.
Calculate the available Sun positionWhy does another site show a different house?
Compare the entered birth details, time zone, zodiac and house system. Astriel uses Placidus by default. Its calculated cusps determine the house containing Sun. A different house system can assign that position to another house.
Verify those settings before comparing interpretations. In Placidus, the Midheaven is the 10th cusp; a planet in that house is not automatically conjunct it.
Read the calculation methods and limitsDoes this describe my solar return?
No. This is the Sun's house at birth. A solar return uses a different chart for a later moment when the Sun returns to its natal longitude.
The natal house alone cannot identify a return date or its house placement. Astriel does not calculate solar returns on this page.
Is this a natal placement or a current transit?
This guide concerns the Sun in your birth chart. A current Sun transit and another person's Sun overlaid on your chart are different calculations.
Their house number alone does not make these readings interchangeable.
