What this placement means

The 11th concerns the wider circle that supports a life beyond direct partnerships. Mercury adds discussion and comparison to what the group hopes to accomplish. The tension is between a useful shared plan and a conversation that keeps expanding without reaching an understood agreement.

A worked example

Ideas exchanged within a group: a chart comparison

Gathering suggestions in a neighborhood group and turning them into an agreed plan illustrates Mercury in the 11th. Negotiating your individual responsibilities with one partner offers a 7th-house comparison. The difference is communication across a group versus within a particular partnership.

How this fits into your full chart

The 11th house tells you which area of life is involved: groups and aspirations. Mercury brings its themes of thinking and communication into that area. Its sign adds how those themes are expressed.

Astriel uses Placidus by default. Each house begins at a calculated boundary, called a cusp, and ends at the next cusp. Use the house number beside Mercury in your chart.

Add your Mercury sign

Find Mercury's sign in your chart's positions table and read it alongside this house placement. For instance, a planet in Aries emphasizes taking the first step; in Taurus, it emphasizes keeping a steady course.

Use the sign written beside the planet. A house can include more than one sign, so the sign at its beginning can differ from the planet's sign.

Aspects explain how the planets interact

An aspect is an angle between two chart positions. Read the rows involving Mercury in your chart's aspect table. The other planet adds another need or concern to thinking and communication.

A square is usually read as a challenge in combining those needs. A trine suggests that they work together more easily. The orb tells you how far the angle is from exact; a smaller orb means a closer contact.

Follow the ruler of this house

The sign on the house's starting cusp has a ruling planet. Find that sign's traditional ruler, then look for the ruler in your chart. Its house connects the two areas of life.

For example, Leo on the 2nd-house cusp makes the Sun its ruler. If the Sun is in the 10th, a reading connects personal resources with public work.

Check the calculation before interpreting it

What if my birth time is uncertain?

Astriel leaves houses unavailable for approximate or unknown times. A familiar description cannot resolve that uncertainty.

You can still read Mercury sign information supported by your entered birth period. Do not choose a house because its description sounds right.

Calculate the available Mercury position
Why does another site show a different house?

Compare the entered birth details, time zone, zodiac and house system. Astriel uses Placidus by default. Its calculated cusps determine the house containing Mercury. A different house system can assign that position to another house.

Verify those settings before comparing interpretations. In Placidus, the Midheaven is the 10th cusp; a planet in that house is not automatically conjunct it.

Does this tell me whether Mercury is retrograde?

No. The house identifies a chart location. Retrograde describes apparent backward motion through the zodiac, measured separately at the birth moment.

Check Mercury's motion in the calculated positions table. A house interpretation cannot supply a missing motion measurement.

Is this a natal placement or a current transit?

This guide concerns Mercury in your birth chart. A current Mercury transit and another person's Mercury overlaid on your chart are different calculations.

Their house number alone does not make these readings interchangeable.
