The 7th house

One-to-one relationships

The 7th house concerns one-to-one relationships, including committed partners and business collaborators. Agreements and open disputes belong here too. Its focus is what happens between defined parties whose interests meet, whether they are cooperating, negotiating or openly disagreeing.

Partnership and disagreement

Two collaborators deciding who handles each part of a project give a practical example. The conversation concerns responsibilities and expectations between them. A disagreement over those responsibilities involves the same relationship topic.

Marriage is one familiar expression of the 7th. Client relationships and declared opponents also belong to its traditional scope. An existing agreement is not required: negotiating one, or contesting another person's position, can involve this house.

The 1st house focuses on personal initiative. The 7th introduces the other party and their response. A person can express a preference on their own, but reaching an agreement requires engaging with someone else's interests.

The Descendant begins the house

In Placidus, the 7th house begins at the Descendant, the zodiac degree setting on the western horizon at birth. It lies opposite the Ascendant.

The sign on this cusp describes a style of relating and identifies the house ruler. Gemini on the cusp makes Mercury the ruler. Mercury can be elsewhere in the chart while still ruling the 7th.

An empty 7th house retains its cusp and ruler. It gives no basis for assuming that partnership is missing from someone's life.

Mercury and Venus in the 7th

Mercury concerns communication and comparison. Placed in the 7th, it connects these functions with relationships. Two business partners checking deadlines and discussing how to divide a delivery would give that interpretation a concrete form.

Venus connects the same house with affection, preferences and mutual appreciation. In that example, attention could shift to finding an arrangement both partners enjoy. Agreeing too quickly to keep the atmosphere pleasant shows a possible tension within that approach.

The planet identifies the function being read. Its own zodiac sign adds style, which can differ from the sign on the 7th-house cusp.

Suppose Leo is on the 7th cusp. The Sun rules Leo, so the Sun's house links another part of life with partnership. If it occupies the 2nd, the connection concerns personally managed resources and values.

A couple discussing which belongings to keep separately gives one example. With the ruler in the 6th instead, a reading would connect partnership with recurring duties. Agreeing how to divide household tasks would express that different connection.

Agreements and shared resources

The 8th house concerns shared resources and obligations. A conversation about opening a joint account can involve both houses: the agreement between partners concerns the 7th, while the shared resource concerns the 8th.

Money kept under individual control adds a 2nd-house topic. These distinctions help identify what a reading is discussing without treating every part of a relationship as the same subject.

Locate your 7th house

Astriel uses Placidus. Find cusp 7 in your calculated house list: its sign and degree mark the start of this house. The house ends at cusp 8.

Read the degrees between two cusps

An enlarged section of an illustrative Placidus chart. Positions are rounded to the nearest arcminute. An arcminute (′) is 1/60 of a degree.

House 7 begins
24°17′ Libra
House 8 begins
1°10′ Sagittarius

14°34′ Scorpio falls between these cusps, so the example planet belongs to house 7.

At the next calculated cusp, the planet belongs to house 8. Rounded labels can hide a small difference between a planet and a cusp. Use the house assignment in your result.

Read your own 7th house

Find the sign on cusp 7, then use the key below to identify its ruler. Locate that planet in your positions list: its house adds another topic to one-to-one relationships.

Match the sign on the starting cusp to its traditional ruler:

Aries or Scorpio
Mars
Taurus or Libra
Venus
Gemini or Virgo
Mercury
Cancer
Moon
Leo
Sun
Sagittarius or Pisces
Jupiter
Capricorn or Aquarius
Saturn

For Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces, Astriel follows the traditional rulers shown here. Modern astrology also associates these signs with Pluto, Uranus, and Neptune respectively.

Compare traditional and modern sign rulers

Planets in the 7th house

Choose a planet placed here in your chart. Each guide explains the placement, with examples of how its sign changes the reading.

How the 7th relates to other houses

The 5th includes attraction and romance. The 7th emphasizes the partnership and its commitments. The 8th adds shared resources. One relationship can raise questions across all these houses.

Read its opposite: the 1st house

Opposite houses do not automatically create a planetary opposition. An aspect depends on the planets' degrees and the allowed orb.

Birth-time accuracy and house systems

Astriel currently leaves houses unavailable for approximate or unknown birth times. An exact time can also leave houses unavailable where the chosen house system is unsupported, including Placidus at polar latitudes.

Astriel defaults to Placidus. Each house starts at a calculated cusp and ends at the next one. Whole Sign starts house 1 at 0 degrees of the rising sign. A planet can change houses between these systems without changing its zodiac position.
