The 6th house

Daily work and routines

The 6th house concerns daily work, service, and the routines that keep life running. Health is part of its traditional subject matter, but a chart cannot diagnose illness. A useful reading examines the demands of ordinary responsibilities and the conditions under which they are carried out.

The work behind an ordinary day

This house includes tasks that need doing whether or not they bring recognition. Maintaining equipment, completing a shift, and caring for an animal are examples of its practical focus.

The 6th differs from the 10th-house public role. Two people can share a job title while facing different schedules and duties. A reading of daily work needs that concrete context.

Saturn here introduces the symbolism of structure and limits. Mars brings effort and urgency; Venus introduces cooperation and preferences in everyday work. None of these placements establishes a health condition or a suitable treatment.

Sagittarius on the 6th cusp, Jupiter in the 3rd

Suppose the calculated 6th cusp is in Sagittarius. Jupiter rules it. If Jupiter is in the 3rd, daily work connects with communication or practical learning.

Training colleagues is one possible example. Whether that duty is welcome or exhausting requires information about the actual workload.

Locate your 6th house

Astriel uses Placidus. Find cusp 6 in your calculated house list: its sign and degree mark the start of this house. The house ends at cusp 7.

Read the degrees between two cusps

An enlarged section of an illustrative Placidus chart. Positions are rounded to the nearest arcminute. An arcminute (′) is 1/60 of a degree.

House 6 begins
27°41′ Leo
House 7 begins
24°17′ Libra

28°48′ Virgo falls between these cusps, so the example planet belongs to house 6.

At the next calculated cusp, the planet belongs to house 7. Rounded labels can hide a small difference between a planet and a cusp. Use the house assignment in your result.

Read your own 6th house

  1. Start with the sign

The sign on the starting cusp adds a style to the house topic. A house number has no permanent zodiac sign. Planets farther inside the house can occupy a different sign from its cusp.

    Read the sign meanings
  2. Add the planets in the house

Read each planet's function alongside daily work and routines. The Sun concerns identity; the Moon concerns emotional needs. Venus introduces preference and relating; Saturn introduces structure and limits.

Several planets bring several themes to the same area. They do not automatically form a conjunction: the measured distance between them determines that aspect.

  3. Follow the house ruler

Follow the 6th-house ruler to connect daily responsibilities with another topic. Read its condition and aspects as part of the symbolic picture, not a health assessment.

Match the sign on the starting cusp to its traditional ruler:

    Aries or Scorpio
    Mars
    Taurus or Libra
    Venus
    Gemini or Virgo
    Mercury
    Cancer
    Moon
    Leo
    Sun
    Sagittarius or Pisces
    Jupiter
    Capricorn or Aquarius
    Saturn

For Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces, Astriel follows the traditional rulers shown here. Modern astrology also associates these signs with Pluto, Uranus, and Neptune respectively.

Compare traditional and modern sign rulers

Find that planet in your chart's positions list. Read its sign and house, then its aspects. The planet can occupy a different house from the one it rules.

The chart ruler is specifically the ruler of your Ascendant. Each other house takes its ruler from its own starting cusp.

If this house is empty

An empty 6th house does not guarantee good health or freedom from work. The house remains part of the chart.

Planets in the 6th house

Choose a planet placed here in your chart. Each guide explains the placement, with examples of how its sign changes the reading.

How the 6th relates to other houses

The 6th concerns everyday demands; the 12th includes withdrawal from everyday activity. A reading can consider the relationship between work and rest without using either house as a medical explanation.

Read its opposite: the 12th house

Opposite houses do not automatically create a planetary opposition. An aspect depends on the planets' degrees and the allowed orb.

Birth-time accuracy and house systems

Astriel currently leaves houses unavailable for approximate or unknown birth times. An exact time can also leave houses unavailable where the chosen house system is unsupported, including Placidus at polar latitudes.

Astriel defaults to Placidus. Each house starts at a calculated cusp and ends at the next one. Whole Sign starts house 1 at 0 degrees of the rising sign. A planet can change houses between these systems without changing its zodiac position.
