What this placement means
Traditional astrology places Mars's joy in the 6th house. A planetary joy is an association between a planet and a house, separate from sign dignity. It links Mars's effort and struggle with sixth-house topics. It does not measure stamina or establish a health condition.
A worked example
Applying effort to daily work: a chart comparison
Mars in Capricorn in the 6th combines its traditional exaltation by sign with its joy by house. These are two different interpretive conventions. Capricorn adds structured pursuit; the 6th supplies the daily-work topic, without promising unlimited capacity.
How this fits into your full chart
The 6th house tells you which area of life is involved: daily work and routines. Mars brings its themes of action and how you assert yourself into that area. Its sign adds how those themes are expressed.
Astriel uses Placidus by default. Each house begins at a calculated boundary, called a cusp, and ends at the next cusp. Use the house number beside Mars in your chart.
Add your Mars sign
Find Mars's sign in your chart's positions table and read it alongside this house placement. For instance, a planet in Aries emphasizes taking the first step; in Taurus, it emphasizes keeping a steady course.
Use the sign written beside the planet. A house can include more than one sign, so the sign at its beginning can differ from the planet's sign.

An aspect is an angle between two chart positions. Read the rows involving Mars in your chart's aspect table. The other planet adds another need or concern to action and how you assert yourself.
A square is usually read as a challenge in combining those needs. A trine suggests that they work together more easily. The orb tells you how far the angle is from exact; a smaller orb means a closer contact.
Learn to read aspects and orbsFollow the ruler of this house
The sign on the house's starting cusp has a ruling planet. Find that sign's traditional ruler, then look for the ruler in your chart. Its house connects the two areas of life.
For example, Leo on the 2nd-house cusp makes the Sun its ruler. If the Sun is in the 10th, a reading connects personal resources with public work.

What if my birth time is uncertain?
Astriel leaves houses unavailable for approximate or unknown times. A familiar description cannot resolve that uncertainty.
You can still read Mars sign information supported by your entered birth period. Do not choose a house because its description sounds right.
Calculate the available Mars positionWhy does another site show a different house?
Compare the entered birth details, time zone, zodiac and house system. Astriel uses Placidus by default. Its calculated cusps determine the house containing Mars. A different house system can assign that position to another house.
Verify those settings before comparing interpretations. In Placidus, the Midheaven is the 10th cusp; a planet in that house is not automatically conjunct it.
Read the calculation methods and limitsDoes this placement mean I am aggressive?
A natal Mars house cannot establish how you behave during disagreement. Assertion and aggression describe different actions; the chart does not decide between them.
Look at the actual action and its effect on the other person. A placement never excuses ignoring a boundary.
Read about Mars in the birth chartIs this a natal placement or a current transit?
This guide concerns Mars in your birth chart. A current Mars transit and another person's Mars overlaid on your chart are different calculations.
Their house number alone does not make these readings interchangeable.

The house topics provide a vocabulary for reflection. The source's personality assertions and event predictions are not calculation results.
