Two-chart reference
Sun square Moon in synastry
A Sun-Moon square connects one person's direction with the other's emotional needs through a 90° contact. In astrology, the central theme is friction over how and when to act.

Compare two birth chartsKeep each person's placement clear
Person A is the first person entered in the calculator. Person B is the second. Each contact compares one placement from each chart.
A's Sun square B's Moon
A's Sun carries the personal-direction theme. B's Moon carries the emotional-needs theme in this contact.
For example
For example, A's Sun in Aries square B's Moon in Cancer connects an urge to act with a need for familiarity. A proposes a spontaneous visit while B expects a quiet evening. The interpretive tension concerns pace and emotional preparation, not which person is right.
A's Moon square B's Sun
B's Sun carries the personal-direction theme. A's Moon carries the emotional-needs theme. Keep these owners with the contact when comparing other rows.
For example
With A's Moon in Taurus square B's Sun in Leo, B's wish to make a celebration memorable can meet A's preference for a familiar setting. B can read caution as a lack of enthusiasm; A can read the extra activity as pressure. The same square operates through different signs.
If both directions appear
A's Sun with B's Moon and A's Moon with B's Sun are separate contacts. Each has its own orb and birth-time certainty.
Read both with their original labels. Two contacts do not establish a stronger bond.
When intention and emotional timing differ
The Sun person can experience an emotional response as resistance to something that matters to them. The Moon person can experience the same action as poorly timed or uncomfortable. These are two readings of one interaction. The square asks how purpose and habitual responses can coexist without treating either as the only valid priority.
Read this beside the other contacts
A square often involves incompatible ways of pursuing a shared aim. An opposition more often emphasizes two ends of one polarity. A supportive Venus or Mercury contact can add affection or understanding, but it does not erase the Sun-Moon difference.
The calculator groups contacts by birth-time certainty, then orders each group by the smallest possible orb. That order is geometric.
Keep the limits of the interpretation clear
A square does not prove conflict, poor compatibility or a need to stay in a difficult situation. No chart contact excuses disregard for a stated boundary.
Use your experience to judge the example. Birth details and chart contacts cannot establish consent, feelings or a future outcome.
Check the angle and birth-time range
The orb is the distance from the exact 90° angle. Astriel's synastry square rule includes orbs up to 5°.
Compare the degrees
- Sun at 10° Aries and Moon at 12° Cancer: 92° apart, a 2° orb.
- Sun at 10° Aries and Moon at 15° Cancer: 95° apart, exactly at the 5° limit.
- Sun at 10° Aries and Moon at 16° Cancer: 96° apart, outside the 5° limit.
These are synthetic positions. The two signs alone cannot establish a contact; the degrees matter.
Read a conditional contact
An uncertain birth time can produce an orb range. A conditional contact fits the rule during only part of that range.
A contact within the limit throughout the available range can still have an uncertain exact orb. Neither status measures the likelihood of a relationship outcome.
Separate synastry, natal and composite charts
This guide compares two birth charts. A natal aspect belongs to one chart, while a composite uses calculated midpoints between two charts.

Interpretations draw on the owner-supplied astrology reference, Part VI's synastry principles and the synastry synthesis protocol. Examples are original. Angles and orb limits follow Astriel's relationship calculation rules.
Symbolic interpretation is not scientific evidence about a relationship. The people labels identify chart factors; either person can initiate plans or express needs.
